Sneezeweed, Helen's Flower, Dogtooth Daisy
Sneezeweed, Helen's Flower, Dogtooth Daisy (Helenium autumnale)
Insect-pollinated sneezeweed does not derive it's name from the effects of pollen, but from it's historical use to promote sneezing. Pollen is distributed by insects, not by wind. Deer & rabits avoid it because of toxins in the leaves.
Sneezeweed provides nice late summer colour in perennial borders, cottage gardens, rain gardens, and naturalized areas. It's fibrous root system is good for stabilizing stream banks and shorelines. The flowers can be used for cutting and in dried flower arrangements.
The name “flag” is from the middle English flagge, meaning “rush” or “reed.”
