Blue Flag Iris (Iris versicolor)

 

A graceful, sword-leaved plant similar to the garden iris, with showy, down-curved, violet, boldly veined sepals. A stately addition to wet meadows, pond edges, and marshy areas. Prefering full sun acidic conditions, though will tolerate part shade. It can also be planted in pots in the shallows of an artificial pond.

 

The name “flag” is from the middle English flagge, meaning “rush” or “reed.”

 

Height: 1-3ft

Bloom period: early summer (May-July)

Exposure: full sun to part sun

Moisture: moist to wet

Native Habitat: wet meadows, pond/riparian edges, marshy areas

Wildlife: attracts hummingbirds & bees
